From first impressions alone, you can tell that Kyley Styles is a man who has been around the music industry. A Canadian musician who simply tells it like it is, Kyley has seen success with Calgary band Satori Life, who landed a $100,000 radio contact during their time as a band. With Satori Life now broken up, Kyley Styles is looking forward to his debut solo project “One Short of a Six Pack.” After their dismantling in January 2011, Kyley’s musical journey took him to the studio of Crazy Lady Records, where for the next 5 months, Styles and producer Joshua Walsh would begin to create “One Short Of A Six Pack”. The 5 song package will mark the 25 year old’s debut EP release.
I was lucky enough to get a hold of the tracks before their July release, and was very impressed with the level of talent. The concept for the album is impressive, with each member on the album art (pictured above) representing a distinct track on the EP. The idea was to capture multiple personalities and characteristics. Each person on the album cover contributed to the making of the EP, as each wrote the lyrics for a separate song.
This unique way of creating music makes each song on the EP incredibly strong lyrically, as well as distinctly different. Eye of the Beholder, Halo, Classhole, Just a Man, and Close the Curtain make up the five tracks on the EP. “Eye of the Beholder” has a grungy sort of feeling, with biting lyrics and hard hitting percussion. The breakdown even features some DJ scratching that reminded me of the good old days when Linkin Park had DJ Hahn. Halo follows suit, an uptempo track with a memorable chorus. “Just a Man”was my favorite track on the EP, with lyrics that really spoke to me personally.
“Well I’m not scared to try and justify that day/
With “I’m just a man, I’m make mistakes.”
