If you’ve been fortunate enough to have Sirius XM radio, you’ve most likely had your eardrums assaulted by “3 Kings” a single off of Rick Ross’ new album, “God Forgives, I Don’t.” The track features some of the heaviest hitting names in rap, Jay-Z and Dr. Dre, and Ross goes pound for pound with them. The fire single sets the tone for the rest of the album, which keeps that fire well stoked and fed.
If you have been keeping up on the rap game, or have casually turned on the radio this past year, you’ve most likely heard Rick Ross’ signature “Humph” (phonetics are hard) or his “Maybach Music” drop on many radio singles. The man has been all over the place, reminding me of that golden age for Lil Wayne form 2005-09 where literally every rapper has a Weezy verse on their newest single. Ross has been steadily moving in that direction, and in the words of Rob Markman, a writer for MTV, “It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when Rick Ross became one of rap’s greats.” Well you might say Robert is talking out of his ass, but the reality is Ross has three #1 albums, and you can bet God Forgives is going to make that four.
The beat selection on this track is impeccable, and each track seamlessly flows into the other. The album knows when to come hard, like on “So Sophisticated” featuring Meek Mill and on “Hold me Back” but it also has a soulful side. Notably “Amsterdam” stands out as a souful ballad, with a great vocal sample rounding out the beat.
Features from Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo, Andre 3000, Meek Mill, Elijah Burke, Omarion, Usher, Wale, Drake, Stalley (to name a few) further add to the album, with each artist bringing some of their best material to the tracks.
If you haven’t picked up “God Forgives, I Don’t” then you are missing out. I strongly recommend this album to anyone that is looking for a refreshing departure from a lot of the conventional rap bullshit plaguing the industry.
